German Shortair Pointer
The German Shortair Pointer is a lean, well-balanced, dog. The muzzle is long and the broad ears are set high and lie close to the chiseled head. The almond-shaped eyes and nose are brown. These dogs should only be bathed when it is really needed, and it is vital for these dogs to be dried properly after hunting to prevent coldness. Their feet should be checked after working in fields, as burrs, sticks and other unknown objects can become stuck into the pads.
German Shortair Pointer is an intelligent breed capable of performing nearly all gundog roles including hunting larger and more dangerous game. It is a pointer and retriever, an upland bird dog and water dog and in addition has a scent hound’s talented nose.
Most dogs with droopy ears struggle with ear infections, and regular cleaning of the ears are therefore necessary. This breed can without difficulty gain weight if not exercised. German Shorthaired Pointers have an independent character and superior intelligence. They need to have regular exercise to vent their energy and do interesting things.
They bond well with the family and are loyal, and attached. With proper and early training, they can be wonderful household pets. Despite the fact that they are protective to young children; they need supervision when around kids due to their energetic and active nature. They need to be trained not to be in a hunting mood; to be more affectionate and less stubborn.
German Shortair Pointer , however originates from the Pudel pointer, another mixed breed between the German Pudel and the English Pointer amongst others. This breed is known for its ability to move quickly and with great strength. This is due to his very strong back legs that give him the ability to move rapidly and turn quickly if needed.
The visible coat of the German Shortair Pointer is rough while the undercoat is more dense to provide protection from the weather extremes of heat and cold in which the dog may need to function. The rougher overcoat provides a kind of raincoat for the dog.
This breed can function in the water, on land, and in very cold weather.
