The German Shorthair comes from Germany where they were bred as hunting dogs. They may be a cross between the Bloodhound, Old Spanish Pointer, Hounds of St. Hubert and the German Pointer. They came to the United States in 1925. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1930.

This dogs are a human family oriented and hunter dog. They need quite a bit of exercise and are just as willing to hunt as they are to play games in the yard. They can tend to be noisy dogs. They may chase cats and other pets so early socialization is key. They like older children. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

These dogs do very will in companion hunting as well as field trials, hunt tests, tracking trials and as show dogs. German Shorthair should affectionate and clever dogs that are easy to train. They are happy, gracious and very sociable. This breed makes an outstanding watch dogs seeing that they are so protective and loyal to their families.

German Shorthair also has lymph glands. Lymph is a clear fluid that is taken from the tissues of the body and the space between the tissues. Typically, lymph is filled with protein and is returned to the blood through the lymph glands.

The German Shorthair is a fairly healthy breed, but they can have problems with disorders such as hip dysplasia, epilepsy, entropion and skin disorders. Most dogs with droopy ears struggle with ear infections, and regular cleaning of the ears are therefore necessary. This breed can without difficulty gain weight if not exercised.  It is a great dog to have with you when you go hunting because it is highly responsive to sounds and movements. In addition, it is a wonderful friend to have when you are out of doors.

Bored German Shorthairs can chew through drywall, rip the stuffing out of sofas, and turn your yard into an excavation pit. This breed is not recommended for apartment life and does best with a large yard and an athletic family. At least a 6-foot high fence is necessary. Today, the German Shorthaired is found widely in Europe and the United States.
