Housebreaking your puppy is best started with puppies are six-sixteen weeks in age. When puppies are this young, they tend to go to the bathroom predictably and frequently. The earlier you start the housebreaking process, the happier you will be as a new dog owner!

All dogs needs to be housebroken. No dog could be amply social until he determines where he should be eliminating and where he should not! If this is your 1st dog (or puppy), you – and your dog – have quite a lot to learn, but don’t be horrified.

Puppy housebreaking should be based on prevention rather than punishment. A key to housebreaking a puppy or dog for that matter is close supervision. In just a matter of seconds your puppy can have an accident, so to help prevent that from occurring you should watch for signs that your puppy needs to potty. If your puppy starts to run in circles, sniffing at the door or suddenly runs out of site, that he/she is trying to let you know it’s potty time.

There are 3 basic techniques of Puppies housebreaking:

The Crate technique – confining your dog inside the crate to prevent accidents.

The Paper technique – practicing excreting on newspapers, paper towels, etc.

• The Litter Box process – practicing elimination indoors and particularly in the litter box

Another important lesson is to watch your puppy very carefully. If you see any signs that your puppy needs to relieve himself, you should immediately take him outside to a designated area to do his “business”. As soon as he completes his task, make sure you reward him. You can do this several ways ‘ a treat, a pat on the head, a rub behind the ears, and always lots of praise.

Remember that communication, reward, and praise are the key to housebreaking your new puppy with great results, and very little mess.
