The German Wirehaired Pointer dog was first bred in the late 1800s and in the beginning of the 1900s in Germany. The origin of this breed is based on the thoughts of Sigismund Freiherr von Zedlitz und Neukirch. It was cautiously crossbred from the German Pointer dog and numerous other breeds.

The Wirehair Pointer dog is a medium sized, sturdily built dog with a moderately long head. The pendent ears hang close to the head. The body is a little longer than it is high, and the chest is deep. They have webbed feet enabling the dog to swim. The tail is typically docked to two-fifths of the natural length.

This breed likes to roam and their strong hunting instincts make them likely to chase cats and other fleeing creatures. They can become bored and hard to manage without enough exercise. As a hunting breed, the dog is naturally obedient and with early positive reinforcement training, the dog can learn just about anything and will perform many tricks.

This is a Wirehair Pointer dog which is gaining in popularity in the United States. He can be a mannerly house dog if trained early but is suspicious of strangers and aloof to all except his family. His favorite occupation is to be out in the field and hunting with his Master. He is a faithful friend and thrives on human companionship but also can be very happy as an outside dog. This is a dog who does well as a kennel dog provided he is given plenty of exercise.

The German Wirehaired Pointer dog in not a good apartment dog. They need plenty of exercise and a large properly fenced in yard would be ideal. They can tend to bark so they will either need to be far out in the country or taught to be quieter at an early age.

They are good watch dogs and also do well with children and other pets, especially if they are well socialized when young. As a reminder, never leave children unsupervised with any puppy or dog.
