When it comes to the sport of hunting – the gun pointer dog is definitely a hunter’s best friend. Gun pointer dogs have been used to assist man since the days when survival crucially depended on hunting skills, not only for food to eat, but for clothing and shelter provided by the hides of the hunted animals and to this day bird dogs still play an important role in hunting for sport.

These hunting dogs love being around humans, and they require a great deal of attention and strenuous exercise. This types of dog are used where game is distributed over a wide area, for example on moors. They operate quite a distance away from their handlers and upon locating the game birds will wait for the hunter to get close enough to shoot.

Deriving their name from their ability to point out game to hunters, the dog pointer was specifically bred for its innate qualities. It is believed that during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the gun pointer was carefully and selectively bred from four other breeds.

This dog gun pointer is an average shedder. The coat should be brushed twice a week with a firm bristle brush. The hairs should be hand plucked, usually in the spring and fall. This breed likes to roam and their strong hunting instincts make them likely to chase cats and other fleeing creatures. They can become bored and hard to manage without enough exercise.

This breed will not be happy if left in a kennel. It needs socialization with the hunter and his family. When not hunting, the gun pointer makes a fine companion dog who is protective of his family.

If you are planning on owning an gun pointer, be prepared to encourage him or her with plenty of daily activities and you will be rewarded with a loyal and trustworthy companion.
