Wire haired pointer is a breed of large sporting dog, classification used by breeders and kennel clubs to designate dogs bred for pointing, flushing, and retrieving game. These dogs hunt by air scent-as opposed to most hounds, which are ground scenters-and their quarry is primarily game birds. Developed in Germany in the mid-19th cent. It stands about 24 in. (61 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs about 60 lb (27 kg). Wire haired pointer is harsh, wiry outer coat is flat-lying and approximately 1.5 in. (3.8 cm) long. The woolly undercoat is very dense in winter but thins out in the warmer months. Its color is usually liver and white or liver with white spotting or ticking, while the head and ears are brown. Wire haired pointer often used for retriever and hunting, because of their ability to track the enemies.

Most of the early wire haired Pointer represented a combination of Griffon, Stichelhaar, Foxhound, Pudelpointer (a cross of Poodle and Pointer) and German Shorthair. German wire haired pointer usually having close relationship with people, especially with children. They are sometimes funny so that, many children like this breed.

The temperament of the German Wire haired Pointer is excellent: he’s gentle, affectionate and even-tempered. Alert and biddable he’s very loyal to his family and attains an excellent all-rounder as pet and working dog. German wire haired pointer does, as a youngster, require firm guidance. All that vigour and intelligence needs to be channelled, but once ground rules are agreed he makes a highly honoring addition to the home.
