German Longhaired Pointer

The German Longhaired Pointer is a dog that was developed in Germany, obviously, for use as a pointer or gundog. The original dog had slow speed, and to enhance its speed, it was crossed with English Pointers and setters in the 19th century. The first breed of the German Longhaired Pointer was introduced when it was first shown in Frankfurt, in 1878.

The German Longhaired Pointer is a happy and cheerful-looking dog. A large square head leads to a square muzzle. German longhaired pointer has round attentive eyes give this breed an appearance of curiosity and intelligence. Long floppy ears dominate the head and hang down to their necks. Their coat can be dark brown with patches of light brown or brown with white patches on the chest and feet. The German Longhaired Pointer is seldom bulky or cumbersome, thus it can move with great speed and freedom. They are muscular and strong breed, so that a lot of hunter use this.

The original German Longhaired Pointers were more stubborn and temperamental. However today it has been bred for a steady and friendly temperament. Even their appearance reflects this kind and nice temperament. The German Longhaired Pointer is gentle, friendly, kind and intelligent breed which is very affectionate and may sometimes experience separation anxiety.

The German Longhaired Pointer has to be groomed about once or twice a week and since they are easily trained, highly intelligent and athletic, they make great dogs for dog sports in field trials, agility and obedience. Brushing once every couple of weeks will keep their coat in top condition. Exercise is a different story because this is a hunting/working dog so it should be able to run every day as well as go hunting.

The best place for a German Longhaired Pointer is in the country with a fun and active family. This breed is very social with all people as well as with other dogs. To keep German longhaired pointer breed happy more exercise than most owners can handle is needed but the best exercise is hunting which will keep them thinking and fit.
